5 billion bottles and cans in a year: Poland's deposit scheme in numbers
After its first year, about 60% of packaging covered by Poland's deposit return scheme comes back to shops and collection points.
Key facts
- Allowing for logistics delays, the return rate is 72%.
- There are 65,500 collection points, 23,500 of them with machines.
- Machines take in 90% of returned packaging.
- The deposit is 50 groszy per plastic bottle or can, and 1 złoty per reusable glass bottle.
What's next
- The government wants to add single-use glass bottles, including small spirits bottles. Rollout is expected to take about two years after the law changes.
- The EU target is to collect 90% of bottles from 2029.
